J-Novel Club gets two Ichijinsha ranobe licenses

Acquires Worldwide English Digital Rights to “My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom!,” “Apparently it’s My Fault That My Husband Has The Head of a Beast” light novels

J-Novel Club, a legal way to read light novels, adds more titles in their library available to its members. The two titles, brought to readers worldwide through an arrangement with publishing giant Kodansha, bring their twists on the romance genre.

The press release sent to us is as follows:

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS — September 27th, 2018 — J-Novel Club LLC is proud to announce the acquisition of “My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom!” and “Apparently it’s My Fault That My Husband Has The Head of a Beast” Ichijinsha, by arrangement from Kodansha Ltd., Tokyo. The first half of volume 1 for both series is available for members on j-novel.club to read today, plus a free preview for everyone else! The E-Books for volume 1 will go on sale in early December of 2018.

My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom!

乙女ゲームの破滅フラグしかない悪役令嬢に転生してしまった by Satoru Yamaguchi / Illustrations by Nami Hidaka

After hitting her head particularly hard one day, Duke Claes’ daughter, Katarina, suddenly recalls all the memories of her past life: that of a teenage Japanese girl. Just before her untimely death, this girl recalls playing an otome game… that is exactly like the world she’s living in now!

She is now Katarina Claes, the antagonist of the otome game, who nastily hounded the protagonist until the end. Knowing all the possible outcomes of the game, she realizes that every single possible route ends with Katarina being murdered or exiled! In order to avoid these Catastrophic Bad Ends, she has to use her knowledge of the game and her own wiles, starting with breaking off this engagement with the prince…

Will Katarina survive while making her way through this world, where bad flags trip at every turn? Find out in this reverse-harem rom-com, led by everybody’s favorite villainess!

Summarizing the synopsis, I can see that this is another take on the isekai genre, only that this time it’s in an otome game setting and that its focus is on the side of the antagonist.

Apparently it’s My Fault That My Husband Has The Head of a Beast

旦那様の頭が獣なのはどうも私のせいらしい by Eri Shiduki / Illustrations by Kasumi Nagi

Love Is a Beastly Business!

Rumor has it that Princess Rosemarie is an antisocial shut-in, but the truth is far stranger. The young princess hides from the world because of a strange condition: whenever someone expresses a negative emotion, she sees their head transform into that of a fearsome beast.

It seems there’s no one in the dishonest world of courtly manners she can trust… until she meets Prince Claudio of Baltzar, whose features remain ever human. The two marry at once, but she learns too late that his human features aren’t thanks to a kindly nature. Claudio has become a very real beast, all because of Rosemarie’s accidental theft of his mana many years prior!

Claudio’s life and future are on the line until he gets his mana back — and Rosemarie would give anything to know how to do it. Will they break their mutual curse in time for Rosemarie to get home for tea, or will Claudio lose his temper first? Find out in this new romantic fantasy.

This ain’t Beauty and the Beast but it looks like it in a way. Don’t get me wrong, the synopsis attracted my interest.

Eight other titles can now be read online worldwide

For J-Novel Club, there’s nowhere to go but up. When I received the letter from Otaku Journalist Lauren Orsini about this news, she said that this is a landmark in the service’s history.

After acquiring the license to Mari Okada’s biography “From Truant to Anime Screenwriter” last March and “How NOT to Summon a Demon Lord” October last year, they dropped a bombshell announcement at Anime Expo 2018 in Los Angeles, California July 5th.

In their latest announcement, J-Novel Club will release the Hobby Japan light novel “In Another World with My Smartphone” on physical print.

“J-Novel Club has teamed with Ingram Publisher Services LLC, an Ingram company, for sales and distribution in the US and Canada. More details about format, pricing, distribution, and release date will be announced in the coming months, as well as information on additional titles that will be getting the print treatment.” [from their Press Release]

This is the service’s first foray into physical print publishing.

I have tried J-Novel Club for a month and I went on to read “Me, a Genius? […].” Look, I still haven’t finished the whole series yet, but I can bring it anywhere as long as I am connected to the internet. Services like J-Novel Club acquire licenses for worldwide digital release — when I said anywhere, they mean anywhere around the world.

For a yearly subscription of US$4.50 a month (US$54, around Php2,881 as of posting) you can read a lot of titles available in their library, such as “Invaders of the Rokujouma!?”, “If It’s for My Daughter, I’d Even Defeat a Demon Lord”, “Arifureta: From Commonplace to World’s Strongest”, “Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash”, “The Faraway Paladin”, “In Another World With My Smartphone”, “How a Realistic Hero Rebuilt the Kingdom”, and more.

Launched in October 2016, J-Novel Club has partnered with various publishing companies in Japan such as OVERLAP, Inc., KADOKAWA, ENTERBRAIN, Hobby Japan, TO Books, Inc., Hayakawa Publishing Corp. and Earthstar Entertainment to bring the latter’s titles worldwide.

Finally, a place where you can read official English-translated ranobe

The triad of legal anime- and manga- distribution websites has been completed with the launch of J-Novel Club

There are legal gateways for reading manga and watching anime but I have yet to see a similar service for light novels (also called ranobe, raito-noberu, so on and so forth). Until now.

What I’m going to share to you is as important as legit anime streaming/manga distribution sites. I would like to introduce you to J-Novel Club.

Just this Saturday, October 15th, J-Novel Club formally launches to the public, with Occultic;Nine and three other titles in their pilot lineup.

Who are their partners?

I obtained a press release about the service from Lauren (of Otaku Journalist — many thanks!), which has messages from its Japanese publisher partners Hobby Japan (HJ Bunko) and OVERLAP:

“It has been 10 years since we launched our light novel label here at Hobby Japan, with the theme of “Entertainment for Teenagers and up!” And on this anniversary it is our great pleasure to newly introduce our works to not only North America but to all of the English-speaking world. Together with J-Novel Club we are able to present these exciting books to readers around the world, and we sincerely wish you enjoy this new form of entertainment and take these stories to heart.” — HJ Bunko Editor in Chief Yoshihiko Udagawa

(For context, Hobby Japan has been partnering with overseas companies to spread its offerings, and among those companies is GreatToysOnline.)

“It is really exciting to be part of the launch of J-Novel Club. With its new business model of streaming timely English translations, J-Novel Club will enable people all around the world to read this new type of literature called ‘light novels.’ We sincerely wish that readers will take this opportunity to discover and enjoy new works on J-Novel Club.” — OVERLAP, Inc. President Katsuharu Nagata

For those living under a rock who are asking, “What are light novels?”:

Light novels, a type of Japanese novel targeting young adult audiences, have been enjoying a rise in popularity overseas alongside anime, video games, and manga.

So what is J-Novel Club for?

J-Novel Club will license the latest and greatest Light Novels from Japan, and release them in weekly installments for J-Novel Club Members on our website, j-novel.club and also on the J-Novel Club App for iOS and Android. When translations are finished, final collectible-quality e-books will be sold at all major e-book retailers like Amazon, Kobo, iBooks, and more.

The cover and first page of an LN title at J-Novel Club. This is the cover and first page for “My Big Sister Lives in a Fantasy World,” available on the website.

Does it have a membership price? What are the benefits?

J-Novel Club access will be only $4.50 a month for an annual membership, and gives you a new chapter a week from all of our series! We will be announcing at least 10 series and continuing to add to our lineup over the next few months. Members get access to a special members only forum for discussing the latest releases. There is also a Premium Membership option, which gives you a free premium e-book version of one of any book in our catalog each month, saving you 20% or more off the retail price, and nabbing you a special high quality e-book with hi-res images!

The annual US$4.50 membership fee is a good start — and considering the fact that the titles they distribute are official Worldwide English Digital Rights releases, J-Novel Club is music to the ears of light novel enthusiasts everywhere — even in the Philippines, where I checked this site out!

I hope you got excited with this great news, and hope to see you soon.
