Challenging Anime's "Middlemen" on "Anime x Angas"

Once upon a time, I was invited to join a Discord server called “Anime x Angas,” who was at that time looking for guest panelists. Last Sunday, they figured out that they’ll be busy going to ESGS this weekend (I will also be there!), so they called for everyone who was available. I was about to hit the sack, but I figured why not join them for a discussion until I pass out (I did pass out). This episode of Anime x Angas deals with me challenging the middlemen of the anime industry, and trying to change the narrative on how we can support this industry. ...

RF Talk Podcast Presents: When Fanservice Goes Wrong

I co-hosted the recent Reimaru Files’ RF Talk Podcast about too much fanservice in conventions, what are suggested to be done to avoid public indecency, what has changed over time and what we can learn from a single tweet video that has spread all over the internet. I don’t know about the viral fella, but let me share the video in question (not safe for work, of course). Joining the podcast are cosplayers Tita Storm, Tita Rells and Ate Bianca. The podcast is long, but I hope you stay tuned until the end. This podcast episode is an insightful wake-up call for every one of us. ...

Cosplay Mania 2022 (or VTuber Mania, if you ask me)

I’m not yet tired. I’m brimming with passion, passion that was fueled by me going to Cosplay Mania 2022 last weekend. I spent the whole weekend being blessed with a lot of cosplay photos, and I have a rough estimate that 90% of it are VTuber cosplays, because yes, I’m covering the event for NewsDrop, and I’m looking forward to sharing relevant stuff there soon. Also, the event was covered in The Philippine STAR front page. By now I think I’m not the only one who has noticed this. ...

Below is my haul, and I hope you can look until the end. Thank you! Mysta Rias by Arzenpai PNGtuber sticker by Letters by Jewel Merryweather by Bebarts ...

Apex Legends Mobile's New Hyperbeat Event Ongoing

Apex Legends Mobile launched the Hyperbeat event on August 23, which brings the hacker legend Crypto to mobile players. The event update also adds new events, ranked split, a new Battlepass, and updates to core systems. If you’re familiar with the hacker legend, Crypto’s aerial drones are redesigned for the mobile game to follow him and automatically track nearby enemies for periods of time. In Apex Legends Mobile, Crypto has three key abilities: ...

Desk Diary - August 7, 2022

Long time no see, everyone. If you haven’t caught up with me, I left Anime Corner last July due to differences in editorial direction. I have decided to pursue my interest in VTuber culture on another platform. Starting today, I am now part of Kawa Entertainment, writing content for its new initiative VTuber NewsDrop. That’s more or less the official statement, and I will not entertain any further questions. Allow me to use this space to write about my transition, as well as the stuff that happened to me at the sidelines. ...

Otasuke Cosplay Festival 2022 on July 30-31

We have been covering events at OtaCute in Manila for so long, so we’ve seen how this small venue grew up to become a hotspot for anime culture. In this month’s Otasuke Cosplay Festival, we have not just one but two venues which will cater to everything anime and cosplay. Aside from the LA Village venue which saw a lot of performances, OtaCute is set to debut its Wallstreet venue, opening the door for a wider experience. This new venue, which has been teased for so long, sports a long catwalk with lots of screens, giving a better viewing experience. ...

Genshin Impact Fan Events in Metro Manila 2022

I have not written anything substantial in this space for a long time, so it’s already time to whip up something special. Remember the time when I was roleplaying at three Fate/Grand Order theme cafes? (Links below) I’m sorry to say that’s the thing of the past, because at this time and age, ang buong Pilipinas ay Genshin Impact. Genshin Impact looked attractive because of its good character designs, catering to everyone’s varied tastes. Events in the Philippines cannot escape the groups of Genshin Impact cosplays. I even got into a Genshin Impact maid cafe myself! (Thanks, OtaCute) ...

TOYCON 2022 at Megatrade Hall this July 8 to 10

TOYCON returns to the SM Megamall Megatrade Halls next weekend, July 8 to 10, 2022. Megatrade Hall served as home to TOYCON for a long time, before it moved to SMX Manila in 2016 as its audience grew bigger. What does TOYCON’s return to Megatrade mean to me? Memories—lots of memories. My first TOYCON was at the Megatrade, after all. Let’s go back to 2010, when my older cousin and I visited its 9th edition. At that time, DC Comics was celebrating its 75th year; 2RATS, CSCENTRL and GamerTotoy exist; Encantadia was the hit TV series; OTACOOL was one of my dream books to collect; and I was just having fun. Those were good times. ...
