Homura, on Haiku

Throwback: Homura, on Haiku “Hey, I miss this one!,” I said to myself when I went to my archives. For this week’s throwback, I’m going to share a post circa April 2011, and at that time, one of the best series that I’ve watched called Puella Magi Madoka Magica was airing. This is what I’ve thought Akemi Homura will write if she does a haiku about her relationship with protagonist Madoka Kaname. ...

Kami no Tsuki (Pale Moon, 2014)

“The road to hell is paved with good intentions,” but “The end doesn’t justify the means” Last night, I was at the Shang Cineplex for Eiga Sai: The Japanese Film Festival. This year has to be the most jam-packed yet (To which I say, “Congratulations!”) — I was supposed to watch “Flying Colors,” but the line’s so long that I fell in the next scheduled screening, which is Kami no Tsuki (Pale Moon, 2014). ...

Throwback: MeiDolls Cafe

Now this is a proper #ThrowbackThursday post. This dates back to January 2011, and the back story behind this post is that I did this after my high school class. Back then, I was so curious of my surroundings that I even walk long distances — and from where I study in the Cainta Municipal Compound, I walked all the way through the Saunterfield Building facing the Brookside Subdivision. The last time I saw them, MeiDolls was in a small space inside the building — it was not big way back then, and its size was at an estimate of 10 square meters prior to their move at a bigger space in the same building. ...

Caliraya — 1 July 2016

(Also in the next segments of this post: Personal Events Calendar) I was at the Caliraya Resort Club in Laguna yesterday for our company outing, and I actually ended up getting more videos instead of the usual photos. The scenery from both sides of the Sky Bicycle route. One memorable scene there is the Sky Bicycle, where I rode a bike. All that I had to do is to close my eyes and scream when I’m in panic, and pedal all the way to the endpoint back and forth. ...

Onward 2015: The Local Anime Magazine Industry

Onward 2015: The Local Anime Magazine Industry (Originally published at Deremoe on December 2, 2014.) It’s time once again to check out the Anime Magazine industry after a long slumber, and what is waiting for them next year. Otakuzine: Not a ‘prodigal son’ We were able to check out Otakuzine Anime Magazine‘s Anime Exhibit at SMX Manila last Sunday, and here’s what you need to know during the event. Misa appeared on her meet-and-greet session, and we got to finally hear her side about her disappearance during Ozine Fest 2014. She confirmed that she she was unable to go to the country and has to stay in Hong Kong due to immigration problems, being told that she doesn’t have a work visa. Ozine will be supporting WarGods — We have heard of the WarGods.Ozine team, and the upcoming WarGods Gaming Expo 1.0 at Megamall by the last weekend of December. According to WarGods during our chat at ESGS, they will be prioritized. We are yet to receive a response from Ozine’s side on what will happen to those who already had their tickets for the Ozine Anime Figure Special to be held on the same date and venue. PSICOM Publishing approached Otakuzine to come back to them, ending speculations that the latter is a “prodigal son,” adding that PSICOM has already managed themselves after the Wattpad hype and their agreement with Viva Entertainment. PSICOM also brought with them writers YanaJin, HannaLove, Lloyd Cadena and Marcelo Santos III for a book signing. Ozine was supposed to launch Issue 91, but for some reason we didn’t see them on the spot. It doesn’t help that we have heard that some attendees had their copies of Otakuzine confiscated to be returned at the exit. We are getting in touch with Ozine for this matter, and this post shall be updated once we get their response. Otaku Asia: Walking the talk It’s been a year since we had an interview with Otaku Asia‘s Editor Kent Diamante, and they stated to us that Otaku Asia will be increasing its price to Php100.00, alongside the expansion of their Gamer’s Arena section and the addition of a Seiyuu section. The December 2014-January 2015 issue will include a 2015 Calendar in which their readers can make, in an effort to make the magazine ‘interactive’. ...

Direk Joey Reyes on Mainstream, Indie and Maindie

[Top Photo] Vispathè cinema, in Campi Bisenzio, Italy. (Wikimedia Commons); Director Reyes’ self-portrait with broadcaster Mike Enriquez (Instagram) I was lucky to participate in the 1st De La Salle University Communication Conference held last 27 February 2015, and I am still on a hangover a week after. After all, this is the first conference in La Salle since the launch of their Communication Arts program forty years ago. Various speakers from different industries gather to share insights on the communication landscape in the country, among the things that I’ve taken note of there, Director Jose Javier Reyes‘ talk on the Film and Movie industry made me think the most. In this post, I will write about what I have understood in his talk; meaning that alongside the information and the arguments he shared with the audience, I will try to make sense of each of it. ...

We asked you: Will you spend more than Php150 for a ticket?

You are preeeeety much aware of the ticket prices nowadays — Php100.00 is no longer a standard due to increasing costs of organizing events (this is what you call ‘inflation’). Since you’re among our valued Deremoe readers, you should know that we are keen on events — to the point of bashing them. Moving on, we asked a question over at our Facebook page — “Will you spend more than Php150 for a ticket inside an event?” ...

Are the Philippine and Indonesian Otaku communities similar?

Are the Philippine and Indonesian Otaku communities similar? (Originally published at Deremoe on December 24, 2014.) The Philippine Otaku community. A thriving community filled with youthful vigor, and drama as well. We’ve been looking into this place for long, and we’ve almost accustomed ourselves into doing the things this community is doing, but have tried to look at other communities as well? This time, we’ll talk about the Indonesian Otaku community, based on what I’ve learned after observing them for a long time. I felt that it’s been a year since I conceived this post, but this all started with a discussion I had with a fellow Symphogear fan by the name of Yuru. ...

Anime Series that can be disguised as Wattpad novels

As you may know, the Manila International Book Fair will commence next month. Those who frequent Wattpad may also know that there will be yet another meetup there (and Mikki will be covering that one while we’re doing the Best of Anime 2014). Speaking of Wattpad, I just visited the site and looked at some of the synopses for some of the titles posted on the new-generation fanfiction website. Meet Kaycee. Boom! End of the world. (I’m the Young Master’s Maid?!) ...

We asked you: Do you want Seiyuu meet-and-greets in the Philippines?

We are continuing our set of what is now the “We Asked You” segment on the site with this one that was held at Oh-no! Manga Octo-Con 2. As I have told you before in our list of 15 Japanese Voice Actors we would like to meet and greet with in the Philippines, there is a growing trend of Japanese artists coming to Manila for meet-and-greet sessions, and we would like to continue the trend. ...
