Onegai Onii-chan, as far as I can see, will be the most memorable hobby shop in today’s otaku community in the Philippines. Here’s why — they know what the market is like, and they act like the way most of the market does: no-holds barred, likes memes, and shitposts. Never in my life so far I’ve seen this kind of marketing where they mix in shitposting in probably every post about a new product, like the one I shared above.
“Does our current marketing make your days better? Does it make you smile? Does it relieve you of stress? Or would you like us to be like (insert other shop name here) and be vanilla?,” they asked.
Onegai Onii-chan is the home to Anchan Primus himself, Edrell Dy, who loves wrestling so much that he don Finn Balor for the WWE Superstar Walk contest when the wrestling promotion held its Manila show last year (he won).
While I did experience his wildness in 2015, once you see this wolf offline he’s pretty much tame — he goes wild when someone pisses him, of which I can say is the fuel for this working shitposting marketing filled with neon colors and Comic Sans typography that this very post is talking about.
Just recently, they asked everyone if their style of marketing is effective, complete with wrestling photos and wolves as heads and all of that.
“Does our current marketing make your days better? Does it make you smile? Does it relieve you of stress? Or would you like us to be like (insert other shop name here) and be vanilla?,” they asked — and so the majority said OH HELL YEAH. I see as well that most of my friends are into their style, no matter how annoying it is to others.
Moving back to the topic, I’ve never heard of anyone bashing Onegai Onii-chan for its services as a shop. It’s where its customers can request stuff from Japan such as figures. This is aside from Chika Takami (or Anju Inami)-related goods, I say in jest.
No matter how vulgar they share their latest products on stock, once you see their posts, you shall smile. It’s unique, and that’s something that nobody else in this mostly-conservative country has done so far. We all like something different, don’t we?
